Newest LA Scavenger Hunt-hybrid now offers prizes to players too.

July 11th, 2011 - On June 1st, superfreako productions launched an innovative game that meshes qualities of Scavenger Hunts and the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books that were popular in the 1980s. The result, "time/trip", is a game that leads players all throughout Los Angeles on a hunt for a series of QR code stickers that, when scanned with a mobile device, cause a short video to pop up and play on the device. The video shows two characters in the very location where the sticker can be found, causing a kind of de ja vous as the player watches "Kelly" and "Katie" (played by local actresses Kelly Meyersfield and Katherine O'Brien respectively) begin a search throughout Los Angeles for a lost purse.

At the end of each video, the two characters leave the shop for one or two others, giving the player a choice to make, and whichever location the player decides to go next determines exactly how the story will progress. One of the initial purposes of creating time/trip according to the creative director of superfreako productions, Chad Kukahiko, was to promote the stores and shops that are participating - all of which are locally-owned and locally-run and not one of which is a chain or franchise. But since launching several weeks ago, the superfreakos wondered if there was a way to let even more local artists and artisans in on the fun, so they've gathered a handful of gifts and prizes for time/trip players.

The prizes include a gift certificate to Meltdown Comics - where the game actually begins - as well as coffee from Oregon Coast Coffee, a canvas bag from TheBooDog.com and a Reversible logo charm necklace from Leanna Lin's Wonderland. In all there are sixteen prizes and all players need to do to be eligible to win is take a picture of themselves with five of the QR code displays and email them to play@timetripla.com before midnight on August 31st when the game ends.

All players who get their five photos to play@timetripla.com in time will have their names automatically entered into the drawing and during September winners will be notified. The complete rules and regulations can be found at timetripla.com/rules.html and absolutely no purchase is necessary to enter or win.

The goal of this game according to Chad is "... just to do something cool and see if we can't help out some great local stores while we do it," so adding more shops, businesses and even a film collective (WeMakeMovies.org) to the list of participants, was a "no-brainer". "Los Angeles is a sprawl, and it can be be extremely difficult to get people out of their comfort zones and to run around town - even to do something fun like this," He opines. "We think this is a fun story and a really cool way to tell it and so why not it make it even more interesting. We just want to get people away from their TVs and out into the world with their friends and this is the best way we know how."

time/trip will continue through the summer until midnight on August 31st, at which point the QR codes will no longer work.

About superfreako productions:

superfreako productions is a Los Angeles-based production company with Hawaiian roots, formed with one simple goal: to tell great stories well, and to do so efficiently, honestly and inexpensively. The company's co-founders are Chad Kukahiko, Denny Kukahiko and Kendall Kanoa Hawley. "superfreako" is an irreverent play on the surname of two of the three founders, "Kukahiko" which means "to stand in the old ways". This meaning and the Hawaiian ancestry of all three founders is something they hold sacred by trying to make the world a better place through stories created for all types of screens. Since forming in 2007, the three “superfreakos” have brought their various disciplines, interests and experiences together to form a generous and unique array of skills with which to tell their stories, and those of their clients, with competence, passion and economy.

In October 2007, Chad Kukahiko launched lastdaysjournal.com, the world's first social network for survivors of the zombie apocalypse, and in late 2009, superfreako productions produced all of the media content and some of the web sites for Benji Schneider's (of Lord Huron) un-sponsored Society for Linian Studies alternate reality game.
